Timing belt

We have a 2001 Honda Civic 1.7 engine which is getting ready to turn over to 90,000 miles. Our maintence schedule suggests to get the timing belt changed between 90-105,000 miles. Our daughter commutes to college with this car and we certainly don't want her stranded on the road. My question is would we be safe to wait until 105,000 miles and if the timing belt were to break is it the type of engine that requires a costly repair?

Hi there,

It would be prudent to replace the timing belt sooner rather than later, These engines will do damage to the valve train if the belt breaks and the repairs can be very expensive. If it were my daughters or sons car I would change the belt at the earliest convenient time. Better to be safe than sorry.
