I am able to put the car in any gear but I get no response when I release the cluth and apply gas. It feels like there is nothing engaging.

Is the clutch to the floor and feeling different? Have you noticed that at any time the car has not been accelerating like you think and that the car feels like the clutch is slipping?

I didn't feel the clutch slipping before this happened, I was downshifting about to exit the highway and I shifted into fourth let the clutch out and when I pressed the gas nothing happened. The engine will rev but it is not in gear even though it is in the fourth gear position.

If the clutch pedal is fine and not the problem, it is now time to open the problem up. You need to examine the clutch itself and pressure plate. Have the flywheel surface turned and then make sure that the tranny is fine. There are other things to include in this as well, like the throwout bearing. Good luck!
