There is a loud rattling noise (as if a hard object is bouncing around) that is coming from under my hood when the engine is turned on (either while driving or idling). The mechanic that inspected the car has diagnosed the problem to be with my air conditioning compressor and has recommended replacing it, followed by draining, evacuating, recharging the AC system and replacing the AC receiver drier assembly.
All this is quite expensive. I need a second opinion and any other options I might have.
Thanks.

Does the a/c work yet? Have you tried taking the a/c belt off and seeing if the noise goes away? I am just trying to see if it is possible that some other device is going out.

Thanks for the question and help Bruce. The performance of the A/C has not been affected as yet. It still works just fine. No, I have not taken the belt off, but would the mechanic not have considered this option before suggesting a complete replacement of the A/C system?

Sometimes they get in a hurry and assume the most common to them cause. However, an alternator can still function with a bearing going out. It is an easy way to test if the mechanic is right. Then if he is, you can feel more confident in his diagnosis. I wouldn't want for him to replace the A/C and then not have it fixed. I bet they would still expect you to pay for it AND the next attempt to fix.
