Rough idle and smooth idle

The symptoms described is indicative of the AC compressor cutting in and out. This could be due to low idling speed.

Possible causes for low idling speed with AC on could be the IAC. Idling speed should be 700 and if it is lower than that, cleaning the throttle body and IAC should solve the problem.

Hello,

Ok my Honda Civic had a random miss. I replace the plugs, cap, wires, and rotor button. There is still a miss. It seems to be more prominent after the car has been sitting a while, or when it is early in the morning, or after it has rained. The code is a random misfire, and misfire in 1 and 4. Also after the car has been sitting for a while (over night) when I start it up, white smoke comes out the exhaust. I have been noticing that I loose coolant in my radiator. The overflow never goes down, but when I loose the fluid in the radiator it will overheat. I add more, and it runs fine for a couple weeks, until I need to add again.

After I get the car going and drive it for a minute or so stops missing and runs great.

What are some simple tests I can do to help me narrow down my problem?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi mphillips03,

Symptoms indicates a possible head gasket problem as you have coolant losses issues.

Get a compression test done to check if there are any variations of the cylinder pressure.

I have a ek civic that I dropped the engine in myself. But I cant figure out why my civic is idling at 2k then after it warms up it will go from a loping idle between 15k an 2k then after it is completely warmed up it will idle fine at 1k. Now all that happens with my map sensor discon. But when I hook my map sensor up it idles at 3k consistantly. My other problem is I use a lot of gas, as much as a perfomance v8. If you have an answer please get back to me. Thank you

Hi civicstreet,

There must be a vacumn leakage somewhere causing the high idling.

Check the Fast Idle Thermo Valve ( FITV) under the throttle body to see if the valve has worked itself loose resulting in excessive getting past the throttle body.

My 1994 Honda Civic DS lurches when it shifts gears (automatic), and when idling it will idle normally, then slow, then return to a normal idle over and over. The car never dies, but it still worries me. What could be causing this?

The first step to solving your idle issue would be to service the FITV and IACV. These are both idle valves that can be removed and cleaned. This should solve your problem.

I have a 1994 Honda Civic EX 1.6L vtec engine with 135,000 miles. Was driving today and out of nowhere, was at a stop light and car began down shifting and shaking as if wanting to stall. Acceleration VERY sluggish. All fluids fine, checked plug wires and plugs and they are fine. Is this a timing issue? Please help - thanks!

Check out the EGR vavle. Sometimes they need to be pulled and cleaned. While under that area check the PCV valve too. Shaking that to see if the ball inside moves back and forth will help determine if it is still good. Movement of the ball indicates that it is ok.

I asked another mechanic about my problem and he suggested to check the wires leading to the fuel injectors. How do I access those?

My '93 Honda Civic idles rough and sounds like I am revving the engine every time I try to accelerate. It was low on oil so we put more in, however we don't seem to notice a difference. I am not sure what else I can try before I take it to a mechanic, so I am open to suggestions.

Hi Ceace,

The erratic idling could be due to a vacuum leak here are to guides to help us fix it.

Please run down these guides and report back.

I found a vacuum leak and it is way better. I don't know if I would call the idling erratic. It sounds like the engine revs, just like when I accelerate. Could these be related to the same thing? They did appear at the same time.

If the idling speed is moving up and down, it is commonly known as surging.

This is due to idling speed being too high and can be caused by :

1. Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.
2. Idling speed adjusted too high.
3. Faulty Fast Idle Thermo Valve (FITV). Check coolant hoses for clogging.
4. Vacumn leakages. Check the PCV valve.
5. Low coolant level.

Car runs great 168k miles. Sometimes it will lose rpm at idle then accellerate and lose rpm, strong fuel smell from exhaust. Turn the car off or drive it and it goes away. Doesn't happen all the time only about 5% of the time.

Check for vacuum lines for leaks, check coolant level, bleed the coolant to remove any air.

I have the same car 91 Civic Hatch, but with 114k on it. It has the same problem but it seems to do it all the time. I think its burning oil. I pulled the plugs and they had oil on them. The car also smokes white from the exhaust and there is dirt coming from the exhaust openings. When I pull the third plug it seems to idle fine, It could be a number of things. Where do I start?
