Hi,

I went for an oil change yesterday and the mechanic told me that they see an oil leak at the bottom and they are not sure from where the oil leak is happening. They asked me to take an oil detection test which would cost around $50 + Tax. I am not sure if the mechanic taking advantage of the fact that I don't know any mechanical stuff about cars. Please let me know if this is an serious issue and should I go ahead and do the test. Thanks for you help!

Hi beemani,

Oil leaks can be from the oil sump gasket, crankshaft front or rear oil seals, camshaft oil seals and valve cover and a few other components.

Since oil is leaking, the best way tpo go about is to get the leaking cleaned and the go for a run and recheck. Oil leak test might not be conclusive.

Without understanding what is leaking and the rate of leak, it is not possible to state if it is serious.

Under most circumstances if the leak is minor, it is not serious but if it is a major leak that is coming from a pressurised passage, then it should not be taken lightly.
