I was about to go out when I smelled gas as I was about to enter my car. I looked under and sure enough gas was leaking under the tank. It had created a small puddle maybe 8-10 inches diameter. I looked at the tank and there was a couple of wet spots but I couldn't really tell where the leak was coming from. I opened the gas cap to take a peek and closed it back. I didn't use the car and return 3 hours later and find that the puddle is gone and the leak has stopped. The wet spots at the tank were still there but maybe they havent dried yet?

A little background - Last time I used the car was about 40 hours before I found the leak and I did fill up at a gas station and overfilled it as I went past the "click' sound to fully fill the car. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it.

What likely happened here? Should I be worried if the leak has indeed stopped?

Since you overfilled it, fuel went into the charcoal canister and into the EVAP lines. Now. You may of done damage, or you might of just caused it to over-fill, which doesn't always cause damage.

If fuel got into the charcoal canister, you should replace it (the CEL will most likely pop on soon).
