I recently bought 1985 honda accord ex. It has 310,000kms but it runs good and its my first car. When I bought the car all the lights were functioning properly. A few days ago my instrument lights stopped working. I had no clue what was wrong. A day later I get pulled over by a cop and I get a ticket for "inadequate tail lights". Apparently they wernt working either. Checked the fuses, the instrument and tail lights are on the same fuse. It wasn't broken, changed it anyway and still no taillgihts or instrument light. Any ideas?

I have an old civic and I knew when you said that the dash lights were out that the tail lights were not lite either. Same thing with the civic. To replace the switch on the turn signal is almost impossible given the age. I have good luck by pulling the steering wheel off (mark the location of the wheel on the center spindle with a marker or fingernail polish. Pull the wheel and take off any of the plastic housing around the column and take off the switch assembly. Have someone help you take it apart and note the location of the pieces (there aren't that many) and clean the contacts on the slides and the stationary parts. Put it back together and you should be set. Works every time.

The turn signal, the lights, the wipers and even the four way flashers are all part of this big switch assembly. Once you get the wheel off and the plastic covers on the sides off. You will see this item. Take out the screws holding it in and disconnect the wire connections from it. Now you take it apart and clean the contacts. Good luck.
