cannot shift when starting car

1990 honda accord ex with 90k
when I start the car I cannot shift into drive unless
I stick a key into the slot next to the stick.Once I do
this Im ok.Whats wrong??????

Getting a check engine light as well? Some associate the problem to faulty battery, power to the sensor on the tranny, but I believe it is electrical in nature, your problem is.

Usually when the key is required to shift the tranny that is caused when a sensor on the brake is bad or not aligned to work with the pedal.
