Electrical problem
2005 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 42K miles

I took my well cared for 2005 accord to the shop as the engine light came on. I was charged upfront $89.00 just to check for the problem (diagnostic)with the computer. Then they said I needed a new ECT sensor and subharness for $480.00. Does this sound right? Is there any warranty of other recourse. This seems very steep. Are they ripping me off?

89 for a diagnostic fee? Autovalue does for free!

What is the exact code that is showing up?

Post it back so I can help you better to know if they are lying or what.

First thing to do is always check the coolant level, if that is good check the cooling fan make sure its no overcooling, if it is cooling too much from a faulty switch the ECT will register a lower degree then the switch causing the code.

If thats not it then your ECT *engine coolant temp sensor or engine temp sensor* may be bad or the IAT sensor may be bat IAT=intake air temp sensor.

If those are not the remedy then maybe you have a bad thermostat.

The sensor should be no more then 80 bucks for a new one, you shouldnt need a harness.

For future reference the ECT is also called the radiator fan switch. It's located right next to the lower radiator hose.
