I just had my timing belt, water pump and surpentine belt changed on my Honda Accord 2001 LX vtec. When I drove it home it drove fine but there is a high pitched humming/whirring sound detected most at idle and upon exceleration. I will bring it back to the mechanic, but what do you think the sound is caused by? Thanks for being here.

Hi there,

This may be an idle pulley bearing, or the timing belt if they have over tightened the tensioner, it is spring loaded and should not be over tensioned.

My mechanic said the sound would go away after 100 miles, its a little over that now. It has subsided a little. I'm just wondering if it still is a bit over tensioned or it is the pulley will I damage anything taking it on a 400 mile round trip for Thanksgiving. Also, after sitting a while, when I went into first gear, it had a lot of tension on the gas pedal, then it goes up to about 250,000-280,000 rpm. After that first kick, first gear is fine the rest of the ride. This has also subsided a bit, but still up aroung 200,000 rpms.

Hi there,

if the timing belt is over tensioned it will shorten the life of the belt, I would not want this to be so, as for the throttle, the throttle body need cleaning, your mechanic can do this in a few Minuit's for you.
