2001 Honda Accord ball joints & right upper control arm

How likely is it that ball joints go bad on an eight year old car? Replacement has been suggested.

the control arm is, apparently, worn as well.

Not likely, but possible. Try this:

Raise car, put on stands. Grasp tire and push/pull both horizontally and vertically, if any movement then possible wheel bearing, ball joint, tie rod, control arm bushing.

Check CV boots for any signs of leakage or cuts/rips in rubber boot.
