There is a high pitch noise that accompanies the ordinary engine noise. When the rpm's are increased, the pitch of the new noise gets higher. When the rpm's are decreased, the pitch of the new noise gets lower. What's going on here and is the car safe to drive?

Sounds like you might have a vaccum leak somewhere. Check the main vaccum lines for leaks. Like the brake booster and pvc. Does it do it sitting in park or only under a load in gear?

It does is in both park and when in gear.

Well if it does it while in park it rules out the trans. I have a ford that does that but only in gear. I'd start with the vaccum lines.

Since I couldn't diagnose the problem myself, I took the car to the shop. Turns out, the noise was coming from the alternator.$550 later, I'm back on the street with a quiet car.
