Hi there, have a 1999 jdm made Accord MT, engine model is F18b SOHC Vtec. Which is the same as the USDM 99 Accord just with a degraded engine.

replaced a 2nd hand F18b engine(since the old one was blown) and cel light went on whenever the rev goes above 3500-4000rpm. Had a error code(forgot the exact code) tells its a speed sensor error.

replaced 1 2nd hand and a 1 brand new speed sensor but still having the same problem. Car just cant rev over 4500rpm even flooring the pedal, and the main problem is Vtec just wont engage.

i've read post about the speed sensor error mean lots of things, TDC, circuit etc. I've been to several mechanics but they just cant get it solved.

help would be highly appreciated
cheers,
ted

Hi Ted,

Thank you for the donation.

The exact trouble code would be needed to understand the problem and proceed with diagnostics and rectification.

Autozone provides free scanning services. Get the vehicle scanned and let me know what it is so I can gather the appropriate information and data.

If your model is an Asian model, there is a possibility you can retrieve the code yourself by jumping the SCS connector and reading the CEL blinking with ignition switch turned ON.

Hi there, is there any chance that I could get a copy of the wiring diagram for the "veicle speed sensor" circuit for the 99 accord F23A MT?

The technician keeps saying thats all he needs, he suspect there's part of the circuit (one of the wire)has gone dead.

Cheers

Hi fatted,

Here are the diagnostic procedures for the VSs with trouble code P0500.

DTC P0500: VSS CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION
1.Test-drive the vehicle.

2. Check the vehicle speed sensor reading with the scan tool.
Is the correct speed indicated?
YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires at the VSS and at the ECM.
NO - Go to step 3.

3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

4. Block the rear wheels and set the parking brake.

5. Raise the front of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.

6. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

7. Block the right front wheel, and slowly rotate the left front wheel.

8. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminals B20 and C23.

Does the voltage pulse between 0 V and 5 V?

YES - Substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original ECM.
NO - Go to step 9.

9. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

10. Disconnect ECM connector C (31P).

11. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

12. Block the right front wheel, and slowly rotate the left front wheel.

13. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminals B20 and C23.

Does the voltage pulse between 0 V and 5 V?

YES - Substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original ECM.
NO - Check these items:
"Â A short or an open in the wire between the ECM (C23) and the VSS.
"Â If the wire is OK, test the VSS (see VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) TEST ).

Left or right is always referred to when sitting in the driver seat, so if your vehicle is left hand drive, right is the passenger side.

Don't blame yourself, this is a very confusing question for many people and has caused unnecessary delays and uncertainities.

What is the trouble code that you are getting? Is it as I had provided? If you do not have any scanner, use a jumper wire to connect the DLC terminal #4 and #9 and turn ignition ON to count the blinking of the MIL.
