I have gone to several automotive shops about an overheating problem I’m having with my 1996 Honda Accord. I’m getting different answers for the same problem. I would like to avoid having unnecessary work done.

1. One place tells me I need a new thermostat.

2. Another place tells me I needs the fans replaced. How many fans are there on a 1996 Honda Accord?

Are there specific questions I should ask to feel that I’m only having work done that’s necessary?

I am not sure about the type of wheel drive.

The thermostat is a good place to start and does not cost much to have done. I would not just jump in and replace the fans. There are two. One is for the radiator and the other is for the A/C. The fans are easy to test by wiring them straight to the battery and this will indicate that the fans work and point to others such as temp sensors if the fans do not cycle on as needed. The A/C fan should come on as soon as the A/C is turned on.

Coolant being low is often a problem and should be looked at first. Also, I would look for a leak in the system as a failure in the cooling system to reach the proper pressure can affect the ability of the system to cool. The proper pressure of the system is about 11 psi.
