With alot of the new starter designs be gear reduction it is not recommended to beat on them anymore. They have a magnet that goes around the inside of the casing and beating on it will do more damage.
Check Battery a low battery can cause your problem.
Check the ground wire from battery to block. Making sure the connections are clean and tight. You can also take some jumper cables and using the negative side of cable connect one end to Negative Battery Terminal and the othe end to a good ground on the engine. If starts the you have a grounding problem. And most like replacing the Negative Cable with fix your problem.
