Last week while driving, the engine shut down unexpectedly. After an hour, it cranked. It did this again the next day, but cranked after an hour. I let it idle for 15 minutes and it shut off again. I replaced the distributor, but yesterday, it shut off again, and again, cranked after an hour. What do I need to check next?

Sounds like the EFI relay that is located in the vehicle on the driver side up under the dash. The contacts get bad. Look at the item and repair or replace.

Bruce, I replaced the EFI relay under the dash, and that didn't fix the problem.

The distributor had the ignition coil in it, right? And that was replaced or did you reuse the coil? That distributor I believe also has the camshaft position sensor and that was on the distributor as well. New or used distributor?

When the vehicle shuts down, that is when you need to be testing the vehicle for spark and fuel to the cylinders. One of those is failing and causing the car to quit. Once it quits, pull a plug wire and check for a spark. Pull a plug and check if it is wet with gas.

We might be headed to the crankshaft sensor. Let us know what you find.

Bruce, thanks for getting back to me. The distributor that is in the car now, is the second one. I replaced the the previous one exactly one year ago this month. The warranty was still good, so the one in the car now is new, and complete. I wasn't aware of a camshaft sensor. The old distributor was replaced when the car would not crank after my wife had driven it home from work. For one year, we had no problems.
I hope this info helps.
John
