1990 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual HIGH miles

While driving, the car made a funny bang/pop noise when starting again from a stop sign. The check engine light came on and the speedometer and odometer quit working.
The car seems to run fine without the two meters, but the check engine light comes back on after restarting and driving about 5 miles or so (not immediately upon restart of the engine).

Hi dstamper,

Thank you for the donation.

When the speedometer and odometer stops working somteimes back firing and hesitation would occur.

It is also causing the CEL to show and the item you need to replace is the speed sensor. It is located below the thermostat housing mount on the trans axle housing.

Would the car be safe to drive to be repaired, or will it need to be towed?

Hi dstamper,

Yes, Dave is correct.

Normally when the CEL shows, an error has been detected and the computer will bypass the faulty sensor and substitute the value for the sensor with a back up mode.

There would be minor differences such as hesitation, increase in fue consumption and maybe a slight power loss. Driving is not a problem.
