I just purchased a 1990 Chevrolet 2500; the engine has a very high idle and the engine bogs down or hesitates when accelerating on takeoff and passing another vehicle. It also backfires sometimes when you snap the accelerator pedal. The previous owner tried fixing the problem. He replaced the TPS, MAF, EGR, plugs and plug wires. He also removed the catalytic converter. He also said that he checked fuel pump pressure and it read 10 psi. After I got it, I replaced the fuel filter and checked base timing (base timing was 2 BTDC). Then I cleared any codes and ran the engine until the check engine light came on. I read the codes and got code 44 and no other codes. That is all the info that I know about the truck. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi,

A backfire can be caused by a few different things. For example, a rich or lean fuel mixture can cause it. Based on the code, the vehicle is running too lean, meaning too much air and not enough fuel.

The first thing I strongly recommend is to simply check for engine vacuum leaks.

Here is a link that explains how that is done:

Next, I attached some general diagnostics related to the code. Take a look through them and let me know if they help.

Take care,

Joe

Hello Joe, I really appreciate your help and input trying to figure out this truck problem. I live in northern Idaho and the weather is not conducive for staying outside very long in the open elements. I will go through each one of the diagnostic aids that you sent me, and I will try to check for vacuum leaks using WD-40. I am not in a hurry; this truck is used for hauling firewood, but I will be persistent until the problem is solved. Thanks again and I will keep you advised on my findings.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. As far as checking for a vacuum leak, the engine will be more responsive to carb cleaner. Regardless, let me know what you find or if I can help.

Take care,

Joe
