So I tried turning my heat on for the first time, but there is some sort of knocking sound going on from where the heater is behind the radio. I did find out that the heat works in the back seats though. What could be the problem?

Hi Stephanie and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

It sounds like you may have an issue with blend air door actuator. This actuator opens and allows heat to enter the cab of the vehicle. If it does not open, you get no heat. Plus, a clicking sound is usually an indicator of this problem.

Take a look through this link. It discuss more in depth what I am referring to. It shows how in general to replace one. However, it also indicates symptoms and issues.

If you find the problem to be the actuator, here are the directions for replacement. You will need to remove the radio and a few other things. The attached picture is of the component.

ACTUATOR
REMOVAL
1. Remove the audio unit.
2. Remove the LH instrument panel insulator.

3. Remove the electronic actuator.
1 Disconnect the connector.
2 Remove the screws.
3 Pull down to release the actuator shaft and remove the actuator.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have other questions or need more help.

Take care,
Joe
