Heater core flush problem

I want to flush out the heater coil and cannot access hoses at firewall. It appears the supply and return line runs down side of engine on drivers side. One hose is slightly larger than the other and have clamps where connected to hard piping. Hence the question, how can there be circulation because the two hoses merge into the same line?
