The most likely suspect is a brake pad worn down to the backing plate. By the time it's worn enough to hear, the rotor will usually be ground down below the published legal limit, and it will also have to be replaced. Most new rotors today are not very expensive. Your mechanic will start with a brake system inspection to see what else is needed.
