A backfire up threw the intake usually means that the timing is off. Was the distributer moved?
When you replace the crank position sensor, sometimes you have to have a crank position sensor relearn proceedure done to your computer. Was this done?

Did this problem happen "all of a sudden" or did this problem happen after the transmission was replaced?

A re-learn procedure is done at the dealer. When your truck came off the assembly line most of (not all) the sensors were programmed to the computer. The way your computer sees the factory crank sensor is measured in the thousandths of an inch. If the new sensor is not in this parameter, the computer will not see this sensor properly--there for a relearn proceedure "sometimes" needs to be done. The reason a dealer must do it is because they are the only shops that have the equiptment to do it.

V8 or V6 makes no difference -IMO
