My 1992 Pontiac bonneville keeps dying on me. It either dies while I'm driving or it won't start after I've driving it. I think it might be the alternator but the car has juice on the inside while I'm turning the key even while it's dead and it won't turn over. After about 20 minutes the car starts. I'm also thinking that the car might be overheating. Not sure please help. thanks.

From your description and the car mileage a bad alternator is a good choice. Those black band units have a high failure rate. Have it checked. i think the Zone does it free.

Suggested Repair

Have the alternator tested, which AutoZone may do at no charge. Black-band alternators of this era have a high failure rate and fit the dying and delayed restart symptoms.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville with about 138,000 miles says it dies while driving or will not crank after driving, then starts after about 20 minutes. Interior power remains when the key is turned, and the owner suspects the alternator or overheating. The expert recommends testing the alternator, noting the high failure rate of black-band units and free testing at AutoZone.
