84 surburban overheating

i have a 1984 GMC surburban and it keeps overheating. I have to put water in it every 2-3 days. it does not seem to be leaking anywhere and the water pump doesn't seem to be leaking either. i had the Trany replaced 3 months ago. any suggestiond would be greatly appreciated!!

Dear Bhelm,
Sounds like you could have a blown head gasket. The coolant has to be going somewhere and if you have no leaks it could be going out the tailpipe. Hear are some things you can check. 1) check the coolant to see if there is any engine oil present. 2) check the dip stick to see what color the oil is. If coolant is getting into the oil it will have a milky color look to it. 3) You can do a compression check to see if the head gasket is blown. If it is you will have low compression in probably two adjacent cylinders. 4) Pressure test the coolant system to rule out any leaks not visible under regular conditions.
