157,000 miles (less than 20,000 Miles on new engine)
I've had this same problem since I got the car, used, and changing the engine didn't help. When idling, the engine surges up to 2500 RPM and even more. It sounds like it's trying to pull itself out of the compartment and fly away. This happens also when driving and I hit the clutch to shift. Instead of the tach dropping, it shoots upward. It rises up and down to different levels, like the car is reving itself. When I cruise to a stop, sometimes it will slowly drop to a lower level.
Strangely, when sitting in neutral, if I BARELY touch the gas pedal the tach will drop to normal idle speed and the car will drive fine for some certain distance, then, it will start surging again. "Surging" is sort of misleading because it will usually rev-up to a high RPM and stay there as long as it's in neutral or the clutch is engaged. Sometimes shutting-off the engine and restarting will make the RPM drop to normal or closer to normal.
Sometimes for an entire day of driving the idle is normal and the car runs smooth and has power and pick-up and the whole bit, but usually the engine runs extremely high and rough, generally choppy. While most people cruise down the street with their foot on the gas, I have to drive with my foot on the brake. To speed up, I let up on the brake.
Three shops have looked at it and have found no problems. One shop changed the oxygen sensor(s), and the dealership changed the entire engine (imagine my sick feeling after spending $3400 and waiting over a month and getting into the car to find the same problem still existed).
Can you [i:ac0b8672bb]please[/i:ac0b8672bb] give me an idea of what this ongoing problem could be. I thought about changing the Engine Control Module. Could that be it?
Thanks in advance for any help. I'll check around and see if I can help anyone else in return.
