Look at the caliper mounting bolts, it sounds like one on the bottom may have come out, or wasn't put back in in the first place! This would cause the caliper to ride out in reverse and rub against the inside of the rim, and maybe even get a bit jammed. Then in drive you unbind it, and all seems well.
