1982 GMC C1500 V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Just bought this 82 gmc 4x4 for a grand, truck gets gas to the cylinder, the kid has replaced a lot of the parts on it. The truck had to be jumped just to get it to crank, he thinks the carb is out of tune. After trying to get the truck to turn over a few times it went completely dead again. Any ideas?

Have the battery tested. Check all cables to be sure the connections are clean and tight, and the ground is good. If all is ok, may be a bad starter, does it get the full 12 volts to the smalll wire on the starter with key in crank position?
