My mom drives a 1994 Geo Prizm. It has approximately 164K miles on it. On Friday it started making a weird noise out of the blue. It only makes the noise when she steps on the accelerator (and she has to be accelerating to speeds greater than 5-10 mph) and we are wondering if it could be the belts that need to be replaced--or something more. It sounds like a bird chirping noise and a grinding noise mixed together. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Take a look at the belt tensioner pulley, and the idler if it has one, remove the belt and spin them with your fingers, they should feel smooth and rotate freely, if there is any binding or woble...sideplay, replace them and the belt!
