I start the car and when I put it in drive, I can slide the handle through the gears. I don't have to push the button. It will not go forward or reverse. Gears are slipping. It is like it is in neutral.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

It sounds like the shift cable has either come loose, disconnected, or it has broken. I am going to provide the directions for removal and replacement of the cable. I'm not saying it needs replaced, but the directions will indicate all the locations that need to be attached and stationary. Take a look through them and let me know if it helps. The attached pictures correlate with the directions. Note that the directions are for a column shift. If you have a floor shift design, let me know.
