Gear indicator

When I put my foot on the brake and then go to put my truck into gear the needle slides across and won't lock into any specific gear as in drive, reverse or neutral and then it slides back to park and doesn't lock into anything specific.

The truck starts and shuts off properly. No light on the dash. It's coming out of park sliding across and then back into park. I will send a video. The cable underneath the steering column is intact the clip is not broken. Video

Transmission is good. Shifts smooth and the fluids look full and the correct color. How do I know to correctly diagnose the problem?

This is common when the shift indicator cable mount breaks (plastic.) Here is how you can replace it in the instructions below. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. If the clip is not broken we need a video of the cable in action with the cover off.
