Gas in oil pan?

A few days ago, we noticed a strong smell of gas after the engine was shut off and parked for a while. I checked the oil level yesterday and the oil level was way above the dipstick mark. I drained some of the oil from the pan and it has the strong smell of gas. The carburetor has been recently rebuilt with a new kit and ran well before winter. Does the thermoquad have an issue siphoning gas and if so, where is the most likely spot for trouble? Could the fuel pump be leaking fuel into the pan? Thanks in advance for any help.

With that much fuel I would suspect the pump over the carb. If it had been the carburetor the engine would have been running so rich that it would have been a chore just keeping it running. And those pumps have a bad habit of diaphragm failure when run with modern fuels unless they are replaced with the ones that can deal with the alcohol content.

Yeah, the older materials don't like booze fuel and have a bad habit of failing due to it being a better solvent than the older real gas was.
