I have a 1997 LX Sport had the same problem when I bought it fifteen years ago, if you remove the instrument cluster there are three harness connectors to get it out. When it is out look at it from the back there is a small module in the top left side that is for the fuel gauge make sure all the terminals on the module are lined up with the connections on the printed circuit board and make sure they are all clean. I have taken mine out about three times realigned and cleaned them and it has worked again for a few years, but if that does not work the module might need to be replaced.
