Replaced calipers and pads, drove car three to four miles and both front wheels were smoking. I think it might have to do with the flex hose. Also, after we took tire off we couldn't depress the piston back on the caliper. What could be the problem?

Hi Redbone,

The smoking is because the calipers are not releasing the pad when you let off the brakes. I assume you are saying that you cannot depress the piston now that all of this has happened. If that is the case, make sure your flex lines are not twisted. If this happens, the brake fluid will not be able to be returned to the reservoir from the return spring for the piston. Basically, when you let off the brake pedal, the fluid needs to be able to move easily so that the piston retracts. If you twisted the hose when putting them back on the new caliper then you will be able to force fluid to the caliper but it will not return and hold the brakes on.

If you cannot depress the caliper piston then you need to find out where the blockage is. I would suggest braking the line loose that leads into the caliper and see if the piston will retract. Basically, you cannot compress brake fluid so it needs to be able to move to and from the reservoir.

Please let us know what you find or if I can assist any more.
