I have a 1996 thunderbird with the 4.6 v8 and when you crank it up a apply the gas slowly it builds rpms fine but if you put it to the floor regardless of rpn it drops to about 1700 and starts spitting and sputtering. It is running so badley like that that the exhaust is will glow red but there doesn't seem to be any restrictions in the exhaust so what else could it be maybe a mass air flow?

I understand what your saying about the exhaust not seeming to be restricted, but that is a classic case of a plugged converter. There may be a chance that there is also a rich condition happening that could cause the converter to plug. Pulling the exhaust off the manifolds and securing so there is NO restriction for sure will verify.

Check the codes in the computer also.

I ran a back pressure test and it was in the norm and when I unplugged the mass air I seemed to run a lot better

Straight forward, there are more than one way to skin a rabbit. I just gave my 2 cents. I may be dead wrong. I'll see what I can dig up to help you down that path. But gotta start with codes.
