I have 1993 Ford Tempo, automatic, 4 cyl. engine. 180000 miles. When I put it in Park, the engine revs up really high, and continues to idle at that speed until I put it into Drive or Reverse. Also does the same in Neutral. Do you have any ideas on what may be wrong and can I fix it myself?

Sounds like a bad idle air controller. It is the long silver thing bolted to the intake manifold. Try cleaning if not replace it.

Also check for a vacuum leak. Sometime the brake booster will cause that problem. Good Luck

Suggested Repair

Clean the idle air controller on the intake manifold, and replace it if cleaning does not help. Also check for a vacuum leak, including a possible brake booster leak.

The expert suggested a faulty idle air controller, recommending cleaning or replacement, and also advised checking for a vacuum leak, possibly from the brake booster.
