Hi,

I'm trying to repair an inherited '92 Ford Tempo that has been barely maintained.

There is oil coming in to the air filter and leaking out of the top of the engine. I've read that I would need to replace the valve cover gasket and the PCV Valve.

Would that be enough? Is there anything else I should replace while I have the valve cover off?

Thanks

Oil in the air cleaner does not sound good! That generally only happens when engine is very worn. The air pre
ssure of compression gets thru the large piston ring gap and creates crank case pressure which escapes thru pcv valve and when high enough rpms it carries oil with it!

You could try an oil stabilizer like lucas to cut down on this pcv oil loss. Use a heavier viscosity too. Like 20w50. If your valve cover has a groove in it on underside that looks like it should contain an o-ring style seal where the gasket goes its because they used to use an o-ring but decided to go with a gasket instead. BIG MISTAKE! They have leaked ever since! I just fill that groove with silicone sealant mimicking the missing o-ring! Really works well! Cheap too! If yours has no groove, you might do better to use gasket. Just coat it thinly with silicone. Good luck!
