Problem with transmission?

I have a 97 Ford Taurus, with 187,000. Miles (3.0L) it starts and runs great. Today it was running along fine, when it just stopped going forward with no warning, it will still drive in reverse, and only go a few feet in drive and then it will run as if it is in neutral. Can someone help me and I appreciate all answers. And yes the fluid levels are fine. There were also no indications that this was going to happen, no new sounds or smells.

I suggest you get it towed to a locally-owned trans shop, some will do rudimentary diagnostics for free, pressure tests and so forth. Fluid can look brand new and still the trans can go out. 187k miles, is it the original trans?
