We have had the car for approx one year and lately the oil light comes on within 1000 mile after the oil change. When the dip stick is checked it shows no oil. Can a car burn that much oil so soon. Am I to ck the dip stick with the car on or off. The car does not smoke at all and run ok considering the milage. Please help.

Hi there,

You check the engine oil with the engine off, if it has been running let it sit for a few minuets so oil can drain back into the sump. As for the consumption, yes this can happen, if your car has a lot of miles on it I would be looking at the weight of oil you are using, also get a leak down test to check rings, and watch for blue smoke on start up as this is often valve stem seals. Make sure that there is no external leaks and repair these as required start here.
