Steering problem
1998 Ford Taurus V6 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 128900 miles

My car recently developed a whine in the engine, which was accompanied by a horribly loud grinding-like sound when turning the steering wheel. The whining sound is constant, and increases when I push on the gas pedal. I was convinced it was the power steering pump, and had it replaced. The mechanic told me it would make the same sound for a few days until the water evaporated out of the pump. Well, three days later, the grinding sound is worse, and it is getting a little harder to turn my steering wheel. I also feel a slight grinding sensation both on the steering wheel and the gas pedal when I turn the wheel. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Sounds like the steering mechanism. The rack is in need of replacement to me.

I would replace the high side hose but first drive the car for a short time, (2 minuets) when the car is off, remove the power steering pump lid and if there are air bubble still in the fluid I would remove the pump because the one you have is defective.
