I have a 97 taurus with 61000 miles. I purchased the vehicle a couple of months ago when I bought the car the chack engine light was on but it passed inspection. I noticed shortly aftyer that when I started the car that it hesitateda little when starting I thought that it could be because of the cold weather but realized it was not cause it still did it when it got warmer weather. Also I noticed when driving that it did not have much pick up at first and then it would catch. Other then that the car has driven great. Well I was going down the road the other day and all of a sudded I lost all power. I tried to start it and it started right back up. So I proceeded to go on my way and made it about 6 miles and it did the same thing this time not turning over when I tried to start it. I reset my fuel pump switch changed my fuel filter and also changed the fuse to teh fuel pump After having the fuse the car started and stayed runing. When I went to drive it I made it about a mile and the car lost all power and would not start back up. I am being told my several people that it is my fuel pump. So my questions are 1 would it be my fuel pump or something else and 2 if it is my fuel pump do I have to drop my gas tank or is there a access panel in my trunk or under my back seat

To determine if it is the fuel pump, you need to check the fuel pressure. Under most driving conditions, it will vary from about 35 to 45 psi.

To replace the pump, you do need to drop the tank.
