Hello my name is Jamie I bought a 1996 Ford Taurus on Friday afternoon. My husband and I both test drove the car briefly and it drove beutifully. Now it is acting like it isnt getting any fuel. When it gets warmed up it loses all power, spits, sputters and the rpms drop drasticlly. Although it doesnt shut off it just wont go and also backfires. The service engine light has come on. We have checked all fluids. I was told it could possibly be the fuel pump is this correct?

Ok yes it could be a fuel pump. However I would call around and find a local parts store that does free scans and have them scan it get the code (write it down) and then have them clear the codes. Get back to me with the codes and lets see what the car tells us.
I would also check the fuel pressure and look at the fuel filter and see if it looks old. If so you could replace it. This may not be your fix but if it is old it needs to be replaced anyway and if the fuel pump is bad then you should replace it as well. Get back to me with the codes and we can take it from there.
