I had a repair shop look at my Taurus after it died doing 65 mph on the freeway. I was told that the oil pump needed to be replaced and the distributor gear was "chewed up". The quote was $750. Is this a fair estimate?

That seems a little high for this vehicle. THe pump can be purchased for under 50 dollars, and the drive assembly (gear) around the same. The rest is labor. I think it calls for around 3 hours in labor. To me it sounds high unless they are replacing it with factory parts. Retail for the pump is 135.00. Also, let me know if they plan to replace the entire distributor or just the gear.
