Replacing Timing Belt

I am a rookie who, with a more mechanical friend, is replacing the engine head on my 1997 ford ranger (80,000 miles, 2.3 liter, 4 cylinder, two wheel drive) and decided to replace the timing belt at the same time. My problem is that I don't know how to get the belt off. It seems like I have to take off the crankshaft pulley but the manual I bought doesn't tell me how. Can anybody help me?

I haven't worked on that particular engine but on my 1.9L, I had to take off the crankshaft balancer to put the timing belt on. I had to fashion a puller to do this.

If your belt goes over the water pump, don't not replace it too!

Go to autozone they will let you borrow a harmonic balance puller!
