2000 Ford Ranger speed odometer

when i reach 40 mps speed odometer jumps to 0 sometimes it just jumps up and down it mostly does this when i put on brakes put on new speed sensor did not help also a few times it acted like trans. goes into neutrel a check engine light comes on gives a code p0500 which isvehicle speed sensor malfunction,thanks

Actually, everything you described sounds like either you got a bad VSS or the wiring to and from the sensor is damaged. Check where it connects to make sure the pins are in good shape and not corroded or damaged. Also, check the wiring to make sure it isn't damaged. If the computer is coming up with the same code, I'm confident that it is one of the items I mentioned.
