2000 Ford Ranger 2nd gear

My daughter has a ranger PU 4WD she is hard on it at the farm. It seems to have lost 2nd gear it still drives ok if your foot is taken off the gas and you wind out first gear. Is there a simple fix for this or do I need to install a rebiult trans. It will jump from first to third somehow checked the fluid its not burned but I have not droped the pan yet mostly for fear of finding gear parts in the filter. Is this a common problem with these transmissions?

Can you get it to shift into 2nd in any way? Has the check engine light come on?

No warning lights and no it doesn't shift into second at all if you put it in it won't move. Engine check light is not on. Does this trans have a external shifting devices or is it all internal.

The tcm is external and the shift solenoids are internal.
