I have a 99 ford ranger 3.0 flex fuel automatic. After about five minutes of running it idles itself up to around 1500 and rarely idles back down. If it does idle back down it shuts off. At first I was thinking it was the idle control sensor causing this. Sometimes when it shuts itself off it takes 2 minutes of constant pumping and cranking to start it and struggles for about five seconds to idle. My mechanic and I put his computer on it and pulled pretty much every sensor wire off while it was running and the computer would not pick a code up. Also when attempting to restart for those couple of minutes I had 60 punds of fuel pressure and fire still no quick starting. We think its the computer bad. What do you think?

Well as of yesterday I figured out what was wrong with my ranger. It ran perfect for around three days and started doing the same thing yesterday evening. Lucky I had stopped by my friends house when it started doing it. So it would not crank again and we put it on the computer. Finally we got a code. COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR MALFUNCTION. This acts like a choke on a carb to idle the motor up and keep it running during warm up. When the truck was hot the sensor kick in telling the computer the truck was cold and the computer would send more fuel to the motor and eventually flooding the motor with gas causing the cranking issue and dying issue. I spent 17 dollars and it runs great. I hope this helps someone in the future.
