Engine problem
1995 Other Ford Model s V6 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 220000 miles

This is an Australian Ford Model EL Straight 6, 4 litre.

Why do these engines constantly do head gaskets, I have replaced mine now for the 3rd time. And I have heard of others just as bad. Is it a design fault or a problem with the way they are repaired. I am very frustrated with this problem as we use it in the desert (work ute) the temp is a problem as well.

You guys have been great so far, thanks a lot.

Mick.

Hi there,

There are a few things to remember when doing these heads. Remove locating dowel's and clean all traces of old head gasket away. Use a sealant on the rubber seal around the timing chain cover. Never, under any circumstances re use old head bolts, torque head bolts exactly as per ford repair book instructions, (not by gasket Co instructions) replace thermostat, have radiator cleaned as they collect remnants of casting sand, blocking cores, use a good quality coolant, clean fins of A/C condenser, clean timing chain tensioner filter, do all this and you will not have any problems.
