My 1989 Ford Bronco II XL's tach needle will periodically swing wildly or show an excessive rpm reading. There does not seem to be a pattern to when it behaves in this manner but is a random occurence.
Is there a faulty electronic pick-up or sender unit that is causing this situation?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

You might want to check the coil's positive and negative connections-could also be the tach itself out of calibration.
The tachometer is always hooked-up on the secondary circuit of the ignition system
