I have a 97 ford mustang with the 3.8 v6. It has about 120k miles. Recently my Automatic shifter has become very stiff. Its hard to move anywhere. Not just to park or to drive.
Can I easily adjust the shifter cable or retaining nut to loosen this shifter lever up or is this more serious?

Please help

Remove the cable and see if it is stiff, check the shifter for ease of movement now. Ford shifters are easy to rebuild, they just use plastic bushing in the housing and normally get loose instaead of harder. If the cable is loose and the shifter works ok, your problem is internal like the valve body in the trans. My bet is the cable.

I took off the whole middle console where the e break is and had a better look at the shifter. It does look like soda has been spilled down in there. (This is my wifes car so dont look at me!) If it happen to be the spill is there anything I can do?

How would I get the cable off? Is there a diagram of just that?

Im not real car good with cars, should I just take it to a local mechanic?
