Could it be a loose cable causing my shifter (2000mustang automatic in the floor) feel like it's floating ? How do I fix it? And is there a mustang mechanic in my area (74701) that will come look at it ?

The selector may be loose, and the outer cable may be moving in the fittings that attach the ends as well, this is something that you should be able to see if you watch the cable and select gears, get a friend to assist, there should be no flex or movement in the outer cable or the selector housing.
